History of Shirdi Sai Baba Temple Chennai

Maintained by the All India Sai Baba Samaj, the temple was founded by Sri Narasimha Swamy in 1952. He built the temple with the assistance of a wealthy merchant. Narsimha Swamy was an ardent devotee of Shirdi Sai Baba who initially worshipped a small picture of the great saint under a tamarind tree.

Narsimha Swamiji founded the All India Sai Samaj in 1940 and travelled throughout the country to spread the teachings of the great saint Shridi Sai Baba. A revered spiritual leader, Shirdi Sai Baba motivated people to read holy books and lead an ordinary life.

Legends state that Sai Baba was an incarnation of Lord Shiva or Lord Dattatreya. He was considered as a great saint by both the Hindus and the Muslims. Narasimha Swamiji started worshipping Shirdi Sai Baba in a house in Nanjunda Rao Colony in Mylapore. With the support of his friend J.D. Pannalal he then constructed the present day temple.

Narsimha Swamiji, a lawyer by profession from Salem and a fervent follower of Shirdi Sai Baba spread the messages of the great saint by moving to different places of the country and also writing different books. He also wrote the magazine named Sai Sudha in June 1940.

It was in 1987 another ardent follower of Sai Baba; Muthu Venkataraman installed the marble idol of Shirdi Sai Baba in the seventy year old temple. Two beautiful gopurams, one with a height of 37 feet above the Garbagriha and the other 23 feet high above the new hall supplements the beauty of the sacred complex.

Pilgrims would be captivated witnessing the amazing idol of Lord Shridi Sai Baba sitting on a silver throne in the sanctum sanctorum. The golden arch above the idol adds charm to the shrine. There is a huge picture of Shirdi Sai Baba hanging just above the Garba griha.

Other noteworthy shrines include that of Lord Rama and Lord Krishna. It also houses the tomb of Narsimha Swamiji.

An interesting feature of the sacred complex is that it still accommodates the light lit by Shirdi Sai Baba himself. It is worshipped by the devotees and pilgrims by doing Agni Pooja. There is a large hall where people can sit and do meditation.

Events at Shirdi Sai Baba Temple Chennai

The sacred shrine is open to people of all faiths and religion. Holy book of Quran is read every week on Thursday at 4:30 PM. Bhajans and Annadhanam pulls in a huge crowd which is also held every Thursday.

Navratri is celebrated every year. Special celebrations are held on Baba’s birthday and birth Anniversary of Sri Narsimha Swamiji is held on August 21 annually. Guru Purnima is another great festival held annually.

Entry Fees and Timings of Shirdi Sai Baba Temple Chennai

Temple is open from 5:00 AM in the morning till 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM in the evening till 9:00 PM at night. Temple has fixed timings for reading Islamic text Quran and the book of Christianity, the Holy Bible. There is no entry fees to visit the temple.
