Madras War Cemetery was built to honour the lives of all the brave men and women who sacrificed their lives in World War II.

The place recognises the glory (and the horrors) of the war our ancestors have fought. And it commemorates the 857 Commonwealth service people who died in the Second World War. They fought and died for the Allied forces. The Madras Military Cemetery has memorial stones of people from Australia, New Zealand, UK and many other countries, including India.

Even though Madras War Cemetery was built to keep the memories of a sad and bloody past fresh, it is a serene and beautiful place to visit.

History of Madras War Cemetery Chennai

Civil and cantonment cemeteries in many places couldn’t provide proper maintenance to the graves of World War soldiers. So, in 1952, Madras War Cemetery Chennai was established. It was built by the Imperial War Graves Commission, which is now known as Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC).

It was built in the memory of the members of the Indo-British army who were sent all across the world to fight in World War II. The place also has a War Memorial, built to pay respect to the soldiers who died during the First World War.

Things to do at Madras War Cemetery

In Madras War Cemetery of Chennai, the tombstones are laid amidst a well-maintained lawn. So, you can pay your respect to the brave soldiers, and also spend a relaxed afternoon in this peaceful retreat.

The tombstones are not only of soldiers but also of doctors, nurses and other support staff. And they have the name of the deceased and the date of death etched. The tombstones have the designation of the martyrs too, along with the regiment they served.

Apart from those, you'll find memorial stones of three non-World War martyrs and a sea merchant too.

Another structure in the cemetery is the Stone of Remembrance. It has a beautiful line “Their Name Liveth For Evermore” carved into it. On the lawn, a white Cross of the Sacrifice (with a bronze sword) is also present. It represents cemeteries by CWGC around the world.

A visit to Madras War Cemetery Chennai allows you to check the memorial for the First World War too. It’s in the memory of 1000+ soldiers who died in the war.
